Swallow the Frog
A few months ago I came across the term "Swallow the frog."
Have you heard of it? It means do the hard thing first.
I'm not someone who is super adventurous with food - so the thought of actually swallowing a frog is semi-gross to me, but it is memorable.
I now use it with my son when he attempts his math homework. He actually loves math, but every once in while he sees a word problem and thinks it is impossible and has no idea how to even start to solve it.
Cue the realm of parenthood, when you are so old you cannot even remember how to do elementary school Singapore math.
I was showing him that if he starts with the hardest problems first and solves them, then the rest of the homework will be a breeze.
That's how life is though isn't it? Lots of big and small problems thrown at us all the time. Some that suck and some that we might geek out on.
Our mindset matters. How we approach each curveball matters. Are you going in with a glass half empty or a glass half full?
Most of the time when my mind is in the right place the frog isn't so bad at all. Afterwards I feel kind of proud of myself. My son says the same thing.
Sometimes though I find if I do all the quick and easy things, I have cleared my mind enough to then truly focus on the frog in front of me.
What do you think?
Get it over with. Swallow the frog.
Key takeaways:
What are your thoughts telling you? That you can't do it? That it is too hard. Awareness is the first step towards change.
Take a step.
Try the hard thing.
